Serving as president of the Kentucky Association of School Librarians (KASL) this year allows me a unique opportunity to advocate for our profession while connecting us to one another in a more positive, powerful, interactive, and hopefully, more effective way. There are so many things we can learn from one another.
With that in mind, I want to work on a project highlighting school libraries across the state so that we can get ideas from one another — even when snow, health, distance, hectic schedules, or other things prevent face to face collaboration.
Would you be willing to send me up to 8-10 pictures of your school library? I’d love it if you’d include at least one picture of yourself so others can put a name with your face. Ideally these pictures would be a snapshot of your library space so those of us who can’t travel to your school can visualize it. If you include students in your pictures, please check photo permissions prior to sending them to me so we can publish these projects when they are complete.

Four video promotions have already been created! Take a few minutes and check out each library’s video by click on its link. Perhaps you will be inspired to rearrange your space, tweak signage, or set up a new display.

At the end of each video you will see an email address and/or Twitter handle for the librarian of the school library you’ve just watched. This is intended for you to reach out and make connections. Broaden your Professional Learning Network. Introduce yourself and make a new friend. Ask questions and brainstorm ways you can transform your library space into something new or different. I encourage you to take initiative and start a conversation. I think it will only make us stronger, more effective school librarians.
Don’t forget to send me pictures of YOUR school library. My goal is to share one a week and while we have two more libraries to promote in the coming weeks, we want your school library to be promoted as well. If you’d prefer to create your own school library video, that would be amazing too. Send it to me! KASL would be happy to share it with our members, and the world. That’s what we are all about: advocating for our profession while connecting ourselves professionally to one another in a more positive, powerful, interactive, and hopefully, more effective way.
Please send pictures to email@example.com and email me with any questions you may have!
